Common Causes of Low Water Pressure

Low water pressure can come from a few different places. Here's what's usually behind it.

Low water pressure is a common complaint, and it can come from a few different places.

A partially closed isolation valve

If pressure has dropped suddenly, it's worth checking that the isolation valve (stop tap) to the affected fixture, or to the house, is fully open.

Blocked or corroded pipes

Older galvanised pipes can corrode and narrow over time, restricting flow. Mineral build-up inside a tap or showerhead can have a similar effect on a smaller scale.

A leak elsewhere in the system

A leak in the plumbing system can reduce the pressure available at your taps, especially if it's a larger leak.

An issue with a single fixture

If only one tap or shower is affected, the cause is more likely local to that fixture — for example, a blocked aerator or showerhead — rather than the whole system.

When to get it checked

If low pressure affects the whole house, or comes on suddenly, it's worth having a plumber take a look. Get in touch and we can help track down the cause.
