Hot water systems don't usually fail without warning. A few signs are worth keeping an eye on.

No hot water, or not enough

A sudden loss of hot water, or hot water that runs out much faster than usual, can point to a fault with the system itself — anything from a heating element to a thermostat issue, depending on the type of system.

Discoloured or smelly water

Rusty or discoloured hot water, or water with an odd smell, can be a sign of corrosion inside an older tank.

Leaks or pooling water

Water pooling around the base of a hot water unit is worth having checked promptly, since it can indicate a leak in the tank or fittings.

Unusual noises

Banging, rumbling or popping sounds from a hot water system can be caused by sediment build-up inside the tank over time.

Age of the system

Hot water systems don't last forever, and an older unit is more likely to develop the issues above. If you're not sure how old yours is, it's worth checking.
